  • Choosing OS for VMware 2.0 host with 8gb RAM

    Hi,

I have a physical machine with 8gb RAM and Intel VT64 support.
    Here are the options:
    1. Windows Server 2003 Standard x32 - cannot be applied because it supports max 4gb of RAM.
    2. Windows Server 2003 Enterprise x32 - possible (max of 64gb), but too much expensive solution.
    3. Windows Server 2003 Standard x64 - possible solution (max of 32gb).
Because Enterprise x32 is more expensive than other options, I want to install the Standard x64. I know that VMware 2.0 runs as 32bit process on 64bit hosts. Doesn't this mean that even the fact that Standard x64 supports up to 32gb, the 32bit VMware process will be limited to 4gb??
If it's a true, the only (Microsoft) solution is to install the Enterprise version...

Please share your experiences with similar issues.
    Thanks.

Does it need to be a Windows platform that VMware Server 2.0 runs on???

There are linux OS's out there that are pretty much free and will do the job.

Suse, Fedora, Gentoo are all flavours, amongst others, that support 64 bit thus allowing you to use your full 8GB.

      What about running ESXi instead?

it depends of course on which hardware you are using and if you can install ESX3i on it or not..
