  • XP gets slower and slower on VMware Workstation

I have XP running on VMware Workstation 6.0.4 build.
The performance gradually decreases as time goes by: delays, etc and then lock up.
The VMware is running on a newer Vista Toshiba w/4 GB of memory, 2 Duo Processor.
The Vista always zips along if doing identical work such as spreadsheets.
Maybe the CPU will max out at moments when demanding a task, but no delays.
Now on the VMware, the CPU maxs out constantly.
I have changed physical memory on VMWare and virtual as well.
At this moment I have 1 GB set aside for VMware XP and standard virtual memory set.
I have the check box of 2 processors checked. Should I change it to 1?
I have done a virtual defrag as well.
As I mention, the performance degrades as time goes by.
    Does anyone have ideas?

Probably won't improve matters but should give it a try.

What edition, architecture and SP of XP? Is it fully up to date?

Have you installed the VMware Tools?

Does the event log on the guest show any problems?

What software do you have installed on the guest?

      It is XP Pro sp2.
It has full Microsoft office 03.
It is the spread sheets that are the worst.
It also has Solomon, and McaFee.
I disabled Mcafee to see if this was part the cause, but now.
Not sure where on updates, but shows it want to install some.
The laptop is gone now as with contract labor. I should see it in a few weeks.
      Any other thoughts, thanks.
      It also has Tools too.

It sounds strikingly familiar to a virtual disk in snapshot mode. Over time, this will make the VM slower and slower as the snapshot file is fragmented across areas of the hard drive in addition to the VM having to look in 2 files instead of just one for read operations.

Thank you Jas, I will pass this onto the user of this laptop.
He is only here once a few xs amonth, and only uses the VM when here or another site in our network!
