  • Move Service Console

I am looking for some guidance with a problem that I have. Presently I have a ESX 3.0 server that is hosting several virtual machines. The physical server has 6 nics in it, with a vswitch for each physical nic. The VMs connect to the vswitches (some vswitches have two VMs, others only one).

Here is the problem. One of the physical NICs failed and it just so happens to be the service console nic. I would like to move it to another vswitch so I can use the VI client to connect to the server. Can I have the service console and VMs connect to the same vswitch and share a physical NIC? What are the best commands to do this at the console?

    Re: Move Service Console

    I figured it out.

I had to remove the Service Console from the existing vswitch and move it to another existing one.

    I did the following:

    esxcfg-vswif -d vswif0

    esxcfg-vswitch -D "Service Console" vSwitch0

    esxcfg-vswitch -A "Service Console" vSwitch5

    esxcfg-vswif -i 192.168.xxx.xxx -n 255.255.255.0 vswif0

Nice job! You were too fast for me. I wasn't around much this weekend and sorry I didn't get to your post. You could have done it with the VIC (GUI) but doing it through CLI is impressive and puts hair on your chest. Be prepared for an armful of women.

LOL Thanks Jason! Don't worry about not posting, it was kind of a fun challenge. Now where are the women?

This is great info! Will this work as well with 3.5? I just did a clean install on 3 machines and I need to move the service consoles to a different port for each one of them.

          Thanks,

            Re: Move Service Console

This did work for me, thank you.

            I had to change:

            esxcfg-vswitch -A "Service Console" vSwitch5

            to

            esxcfg-vswif -A "Service Console" vSwitch5

            and then it all worked.

            Thanks again,

            -Travis

Glad it worked for you Travis! It took a little digging for me to get it but worked fine for me on 3.0.1 and I tested it on a 3.5 box as well.
