  • Which to go with NAS or iSCSI?

I have my personal home setup at the moment with the following:

ESXi 3.5 on 64mb USB Key
Dell Precision 690 2 Quad Core e5345 processors
    16GB or Ram
    1 X Sata 250

FreeNAS 0.686.4 Stable on 64mb USB Key
    Dell 370 3.0Ghz Processor
    2GB Ram
    4 x 250 SATA Drives
    2 x 1TB drives.

I currently have a Gigabit Crossover Cable going to both boxes with both NIC's Gigabit and 2 nics (one on each, (total of 4) going back out to the network.

I was wondering if it would be beneficial to go to iSCSI through FreeNAS setting up the extents or stay with current NFS shares? I just want to get the best throughput I can with what I have. I know I can go with the SAS drives as local storage but SATA is cheaper.

    Thanks,

    -Ed

for a home/lab environment, you will not see noticable differences between iscsi and NFS
