  • A Supportable ESX Configuration

    Hi,

I have been asked to put together an idea of a supportable ESX server to determine whether we can or cannot accept a server into mainstream support (as opposed to development).

This isn't so much about CPU, memory or HD spec (though I would welcome recommendations on those) as number of NIC's, storage type and so on.

    My initial thoughts are:
System: Server system (as opposed to a workstation running as a server).
    Compliancy: VMWare ESX HCL.
    NIC's (I'm thinking 4 NIC's ... 1 management, 1 backup and 2 live)
Storage: SCSI/serial SCSI RAID or SAN
Config: OS/dump areas on first mirrored drive only.

I suppose limits on numbers of VM's vs hardware might also be something to consider as well.

My intention is to develop a document and checklist for this so any thoughts anyone might have on this would be welcome.

Download the configuresoft esx security scanner and see what you think of the free report as well, this should scan against some best practices.
    cheers

I've done that and I was going to say, " but installing it might be difficult in any reasonable time frame since I work almost entirely via terminal service sessions and I have no control over what is installed on them." when I realised it wasn't an installable.

Unfortunately neither server has Java on them

      Cool ... ta

How many ESX hosts will you have? Using VMotion at all? I'm driving at your NIC configuration.
        VCDX3 #34, VCDX4, VCDX5, VCAP4-DCA #14, VCAP4-DCD #35, VCAP5-DCD, VCPx4, vEXPERTx4, MCSEx3, MCSAx2, MCP, CCAx2, A+

          Hi Jason,

Not many at present but I think the company is heading in that direction hence the need for a basic standard for ESX systems. At the present moment we are not using VMotion.

OK, I've finally managed to run the TripWire ConfigCheck (had to jump through all kinds of hoops, change requests and so on, to install JAVA) but when I run it I get:

"Could not connect to host via SSH. Please verify that hostname and login information are correct"

            The parameters requested are:
ESX Hostname: I had to edit the 'hosts' file to get this to resolve but otherwise OK
Username/Password: Using my logon (non admin)
            Root Password: Supplied AOK

            Any ideas?

I suspect you are confusing two things here
              http://www.configuresoft.com/compliance-checker.aspx
              and
              http://www.tripwire.com/configcheck/...ckdownload.cfm

I've not tried the tripwire one.
              cheers

Hmmm ... not sure I'll be able to install that one as thse are locked down servers
