  • best way to share RAID array amonst vms on one server

    HI

I have a need to run multiple VMs on one server, which also has to be the same physical machine which has a IBM serveraid array (cant use another machine).

so I'm wondeing what the best way to share out the disk would be. Assuming we use ESXi 3.5i

    1) install esx on the machine, allocate almost all of the raid to a single vm, then for the other VMs, use that one vm's allocated disk via NFS, or iSCSI, or ... (this seems overhead intensive)

is there any other way ? I specifically dont want to have to pre-allocate the total disk space for each VM... there must be some way to share this all in a non-overhead intensive way, sn't there ?

You will not be able to export the disk (share them) using ESX 3i

Your first idea of creating a VM that will hold the storage space and then export them out to the rest of your network is most probably the best solution at the moment

but would NFS or iSCSI be too much overhead ??

I assume a VM sharing it over NFS will be less overhead than a VM owning the whole disk and sharing it via iSCSI ?? or any other way that is 'best' ?

      What about VMFS ?

      p.s. I meant ESX 3.5i

You cannot present the local disks on your ESX3i host to the outside.

VMFS will only be visible to another ESX host attached directly to the storage.

If you want to share the local storage you have with other computers, a VM with all the disk allocated to it will have to be the way to go.
