  • OS Virtualization - AMD or Intel

    hi

i wud be gettin new system particularly for OS Virtualization , Server Consolidations
via VMware Workstation or VMware Server

So confused which platform to opt for
AMD Phenoms Quad proccy offering Second Generated Hardware Assisted Virt. via their RVI
( Rapid Virtualization technology ) nd support for nested tables ( AMD V with RVI )

    or

Intel Quad 2 Core Q6600 GO @ oced to 3.2 ~ or neardby offering first Gen. Virt. tech. via
    Intel VT .

I m pretty much concerned abt Disk I/O Performance with VMz nd wud be opting for a RAID - 0
array for Virtual Machines to increase throughputs nd to decrease i/o bottlenecks

I wud be only using the onboard Controller nd no thoughts of getting a Discrete Reputed Controller

nd with that AMD SB 7xx chipsets performing sluggishly , poor drivers , lack of performance
I don,t wanna opt for AMD although AMD Phenoms offer RVI but lag in I/O due to SB 7xx

These reason for opting Intel instead of AMD is that Intel Controllers offeres quiet good
performance ... so there wud be no Constraints with I/O performance

So here are the two proposed Configs

    AMD ...

CPU - AMD Phenom 9950 stock or whtevr higher it cud go using
    any good Heat sink ( 125 W TDP )
    Mobo- ASUS M3A78-T
    RAM - Transcend 8 GB DDR II 800 Mhz ( powerchips )
( not going with 1066mhz modules due to phenom limitations
    with supporting PC-8500 modules @ a single channel )

    HDD - WDC 640 Gb Caviar black * 2 ( raid 0 ) for VM ,
    wdc 640 black ( OS )
wdc 640 black ( primarly iso images storage )
Optical Drive - LG 22x IDE
    PSU - Corsair VX 550
    Chassis - CM 690

    Intel...
    CPU - Intel q2c Q6600 @ 3.2-3.6 Ghz ~
    Mobo- ASUS P5Q-EM

    Rest all Same as

LIMITED BY BUDGET .. so no 45nm Quads or third party controllers

Host OS wud be 2k8 Srvr x64 nd sometimes RED HAT 5.2 x64
    Guest OSes as per requirements.

Recommend any Changes nd which to opt for
    AMD or Intel

    thanks

Sorry to say but on what you would be using the machine for the amount of difference you would see between an Intel and AMD CPu would be minimal (less than 3-5%)

So go with what heart tells you

      What Maish said.

The performance benefits between AMD and Intel CPUs with similar speeds for virtualization are negligible.

Just remember that with RAID 0 if you lose one disk then you lose all the data on all other disks in that array.
        1 1 was a racehorse.
        2 2 was 1 2.
        1 1 1 1 race 1 day,
        2 2 1 1 2

Quite right. Given the number of drives you've suggested using, you might be better off looking at combining them all into a RAID 5 - with 4 drives you could either have a 4 disk array, or 3 disks with a hot spare. RAID 5 gives you the best of both worlds - you get the fault tolerance of RAID 1 (arguably better fault tolerance too) and you get a performance increase.

don,t really concerned abt data loss ........ so wud be opting for RAID 0
only two disks wud be participating in a Raid Array
            rest all Standalone's

            Thanks Guys

Sincerely hope this isn't intended to be a production system then
