  • What could be the drawbacks of setting up a file and print server on a virtual box?

    Hello,

Are serious drawbacks for setting up a file and print server on a virtual box? We are running VMWare ESX 3.5 and are thinking of creating a virtual machine running windows server 2003 R2 and installing the Print Server and File Server Roles on it. Is a good practice or are there issues that we can run into down the road?

Thanks in advance for your feedbacks.

File I/O performance inside of a virtual machine won't match that of a physical machine. Those that are picky may notice the throughput difference. However, you could ensure maximum throughput by ensuring your virtual disk maps back to a high performance disk subsystem such as an array controller or SAN with many spindles. Another swell idea would be to virtualize your file server, but use an RDM for the file storage.

Print server performance is a non issue.

Thank you very much indeed for your input. Much appreciated ! We have a Cybernetics miSAN D that we are planning to use for this project.
      Once again thanks.
