  • Unable to install VMWare ESXi Installable

    Hi All,

I downloaded the free version of ESXi isntallable, but was unable to load the same on to my system.

At start up it showed the following screen and then stopped and rebooted.
Actually, the progress bar showed about 60% of installation and then started showing garbage, then "boot" at the bottom of the screen.
After this the system rebooted and the same thing goes on over and over.

    Please help.
This is the only screen that I can see during the installation.

Re: Unable to install VMWare ESXi Installable

Is your hardware on the ESXi Hardware Compatibility List (HCL)?

    Hardware Compatibility Guides
    http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/resources/cat/119
These are the HCLs for the product. Follow them to ensure your environment is officially supported by VMware. No production environment should stray from what's documented here.

    Community-Supported Hardware/Software for VMware Infrastructure
    http://www.vmware.com/resources/communitysupport/
In 2007, VMware began maintaining a web page of non-HCL hardware that works with VMware ESX. This is a list of hardware and software components that have been reported to work with VMware Infrastructure, either by the community or by the individual vendors themselves. Great for people trying to build a cheap lab out of dubious or whitebox hardware. If your hardware is not on the official VMware HCL, check this list to see if someone has reported that your particular piece of hardware works with ESX.

Re: Unable to install VMWare ESXi Installable

      Hi Jason,

Thanks for your input. I did not find my hardware in the various links that you had provided. Actually i have an old P4 2GHz machine that I wanted to convert to a server that can handle multiple VMs.
Now it seems that ESXi will only install in the server/architectures mentioned in the lists.

Is there any other way that you can i can convert this old machine to serve as server with multiple VMs running on it?

Sure. You can use VMware Server. If your hardware will run Windows or certain flavors of Linux, VMware Server will run on top of that. The host OS will add some overhead. VMware Server is FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
