I am new to Vmware and stumbled upon an article in PC Pro talking about the VMware converter. I wanted to double check that should I use this coverter on a production server, to allow me to carry out configuration tests and restores, will it effect the server.

    Re: VMware converter

Converter is used as a transformation tool to convert virtual machines and physical machines too and from different formats. It does work with a few 3rd party applications and is can also be used to restore VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB) backups.

VMware Converter is safe to install on a production server. Afterall, one of it's options during installation is to install an agent that allows the machine it's being installed on to be converted from phsyical to virtual format (P2V). Just be sure you are using the latest version. Earlier versions had some annoying bugs.
