using ESXI and the VI client, how do you open/add an existing VM to inventory, for example if you accidently removed it from inventory? I am able to do this with VMware server, but cannot find the option in ESXI

In the Virtual Infrastructure Client, Browse your datastore, right click on the .VMX file and "Add to inventory".

You can also do it via CLI using the vmware-cmd command.
