  • Virualizing a PC with application for demo

    Hi,
    I have a requirement where i need to create a vm of a pc with a java application installed.This vm needs to have all the softwares the application depends on (IBM websphere, oracle, netbeans etc).
    I am a newbie to vm concept, so pl help me resolve my issues/queries!
    queries:
    a)is it possible to have a vm with just the application and dependent softwares (bare vm without OS etc) . This is because of space constraint. Going ahead the plan is to make copies of this vm and cut it in CD/DVD for demo purposes. So size would matter.
    I tries using vm converter 3.03 and vmware player.

    b)Are there any free application virtualizers available?
    Thanks
    venkat

    In short yes it might be possible, but the long answer is most probably not.

    You will need the whole OS under the Application in order for app to run so you will need a full clone of your physical PC.

    When converting the PC with converter, you can re-size the the disks to a smaller size if need be.

    The short answer (actually the should be the long answer ... ) it might be possible to do it with ThinApp (a.k.a. thinstall) bu that is a whole different ballgame.....

      You can't run applications without an OS somewhere. Even Thinapp requires an OS. Why are you space constrained from running an OS? Can you elaborate further? Maybe we could provide some ideas.

        Well, i went though thinapps and realised the same.
        Now i have another problem. Am done with cloning using vmware converter and trying to play it using vmware player. But the whole thing is damn slow. it has taken me almost 2 hours and more to just let the vm boot up and start the IBM server installed in it.
        Is there anyway i can tune the memory used by vmware to take up more?
        thanks n regards

          Well you will have to of course leave some memory for the Host operating system and you can change the amount of memory allocated to the Virtual machine through the GUI.

          If you are using player then you might have to change the memory through the vmx file though.

            Two hours to boot a VM is terrible. Where is the suffering/bottleneck?

            What are the key resources available on your host?

            Memory:
            Disk:

            What are the key resource requirements and usage patterns inside of your guest VM?

              Hi,
              Thanks
              now it works fine after i added/modified the config in the cmx file
              memsize = "1512"
              mainMem.useNamedFile = "FALSE"
              http://vmfaq.com/?View=entry&EntryID=25

              Are there any other configurations to be done. I have oracle installed in the vm but when tried connecting via toad, it says "operation timed out"
              Thanks n regards
