  • Running ESX on VMWare Workstation- test environment. need 2 nics for v switch

    Running ESX on VMWare Workstation- test environment.
    need to get 2 nics detected.
    I have tried manually copying the details of the first e1000 nic, but it does not get detected.
    Tried to do it through the workstation console and modify the nic to e1000
    still not detected.
    followed switches at http://sanbarrow.com/vmx/vmx-network-advanced.html with no luck.

    this is the same as ethernet0, except mac and address offset are different.

    ethernet1.present = "FALSE"
    ethernet1.VirtualDev = "e1000"
    ethernet1.connectionType = "bridged"
    ethernet1.addressType = "generated"
    ethernet1.wakeOnPcktRcv = "FALSE"
    ethernet1.generatedAddress = "00:0c:29:02:aa:ab"
    ethernet1.generatedAddressOffset = "10"

    any ideas??

    ethernet1.present = "FALSE" ???
    That will ensure the NIC isn't present.

    What version of ESX?
    What version of Workstation?

    There are specific details that have changed through the different versions in order to make ESX on Workstation work properly.

      esx 3.0.1
      workstation 6.?

      ethernet1.present = "FALSE"

      thats weird because that is what ethernet0 says and it works, i just copied eth0 details and changed the eth number?? anyway i will try it with TRUE.

        Can you post the full context of your vmx file?

        If you copied one from the other, then you might have the identical MAC address for both NIC's - which is asking for trouble...

          things went pair shaped with conectivity issues, so i had to go back to my original VMX file, here is my file without my adding eth1:

          config.version = "8"
          virtualHW.version = "4"
          numvcpus = "2"
          scsi0.present = "TRUE"
          scsi0.virtualDev = "lsilogic"
          memsize = "1000"
          scsi0:0.present = "TRUE"
          scsi0:0.fileName = "ESX.vmdk"
          ide1:0.present = "FALSE"
          ide1:0.fileName = "auto detect"
          ide1:0.deviceType = "cdrom-raw"

          ethernet0.present = "TRUE"
          ethernet0.VirtualDev = "e1000"
          ethernet0.connectionType = "bridged"
          ethernet0.addressType = "generated"
          ethernet0.wakeOnPcktRcv = "FALSE"
          svga.autodetect = "TRUE"
          mks.keyboardFilter = "allow"

          tools.upgrade.policy = "useGlobal"
          monitor_control.restrict_backdoor = TRUE
          monitor_control.vt32 = TRUE
          monitor_control.enable_svm = TRUE

          ide1:0.autodetect = "TRUE"
          floppy0.fileName = "A:"

            Re: Running ESX on VMWare Workstation- test environment. need 2 nics for v switch

            Adding this to your vmx file

            ethernet1.present = "TRUE"
            ethernet1.VirtualDev = "e1000"
            ethernet1.connectionType = "bridged"
            ethernet1.addressType = "generated"
            ethernet1.wakeOnPcktRcv = "FALSE"

            Should add a second NIC.

            Close the Vmware Workstation
            Edit the file manually and add the above.
            Open workstation again.

            Let us know how it goes.
