  • Can I run VMWare & MS Virtual Server on the same PC?

    Hello all,

    Simple question I hope...
Is it possible to run both VMWare & Microsoft Virtual Server on the same PC?

    thx, Pete.

    sure, it's just software.
will require a load of resources though

Re: Can I run VMWare & MS Virtual Server on the same PC?

I guess I should of given more info....
The hardware I'm testing on is a quad core system with 4GB RAM 1tb of disk space.

It isn't running any production VM's at the moment, I'm just in the playing stage.

I have tried installing & running latest version of VMware & M VS on the same PC & have found that both apps stop working when the second install is completed.
I have installed both apps with the default configuration.
Doesn't make any difference if I change the order of install.
I tested the same config on a different PC running ser_2003_STD.

I searched the web I didn't find any info refering to issues related to this, hence the reason I'm asking you guru's...

      My hope is;
      (a) someone has experienced this same issue & has a work around.(2) It is confirmed that it won't work.(III) Put this behind me & move on with my life.(sorry slipped off topic...)

      Thanks for your wisdom.

      Pete.

well, if it doesn't work, then it doesn't don't see any reason in running both on the same machine anyway

I was really hoping someone had tried this already...

I will look @ it further today & hopefully I can posted some results & idea's.

            Thanks.

Re: Can I run VMWare & MS Virtual Server on the same PC?

Remember the MS IE and Netwcape browser wars? It was rumored that when both are installed on the same computer, one would prevent the other one from running (properly). I wonder if there was ever any truth to that?

Re: Can I run VMWare & MS Virtual Server on the same PC?

What do you mean when you say "stop working"? Does the guest boot but can't talk to anything on the network ?

My bet is that you can't install both as both VMWare and MS-VS fiddle with TCP/IP stack and bind their own protocol to the NICs - this is where I expect this to break.

Can you stop VMWare services and make MS-VS work ?

To take this a bit, what are the reasons for wanting to run both VS apps on the same machine? It is a bit like wanting to run MS Word and Wordperfect on the same device to create documents. Either will do the job but one might be better suited to what you are trying to achieve.

Both VMWare Server and MS Virtual Server can be ran on the same physical box, I have done it. Just keep in mind your resource limitations.

Re: Can I run VMWare & MS Virtual Server on the same PC?

Hi, I am new around here, but if this helps....

I have tried this under Vista 64 bit, and I get BSoD when I start up Virtual Server when VM Server 2 beta RC2. They both work, but not at the same time. I discover this when I start up one and I have fogotten to stop the other one

I have run various versions of VM and MS server on XP 32 and Vista 64 with no issues except for running together.

As per an earlier post, why would you want to? I run both, but not at the same time as the hardware support varies and it depends what I want to do. At present I am testing Win Server 2008 and learning about it. I find the VM software in its current form more responsive.

I am using Intel dual core E6750 with 8GB mem
