  • Upgrading to ESX 3.5 update 1

Hi, My ESX servers are running with v3.0.1 and VC is running with v2.0.

I am planning for an upgrade to 3.5 update 1 and VC 2.5 update 1.

Do you have any recommendation for doing this upgrade? I have done through the Vmware documents and got clarity on process and update manager. But still posting here to see if I can get some experts comments from their experience of upgrade.

    Thanks,
    Sitaram

        Thanks DYasny for reply.

Do I need to have any special licenses for upgrading to 3.5?

        Thanks,

Re: Upgrading to ESX 3.5 update 1

Licenses for VI3.x apply to all 3.x versions (ie. 3.0, 3.0.1, 3.5.0, 3.5.0 Update 1). No need to get new licenses.

A few things to watch out for:
          1. Database upgrades for VirtualCenter are always hairy. Be sure to have backups of your database before you proceed.

          2. I've personally found that you cannot VMotion between 3.0.1 hosts and 3.5.0 Update 1 hosts. Keep that in mind if you are doing rolling upgrades.

          3. VMware Update Manager is great but I have run into a few bugs. One of the April ESX patches does not install correctly and will fail the remaining patches after it. The Update Manager plugin is also real flakey if your update manager service or database goes down.

            another thing:
if you're behind an NTLM proxy, you need to use NTLMAPS and set up http_proxy and ftp_proxy variables to use the localhost ports
