  • VMWare for small business, scaling to remote sites

I'm looking into using a VDI setup for all desktops at our main office. We'll be adding a couple new desktops at the office soon, and in 09 we'll be adding a couple new offices. Converting to a virtualization solution now, before we have a lot of fat desktop hardware, seems like it would be the most sensible solution to save time, money, and headache later on.

So, for now, I'm looking into options for setting VDI up in 1 office with under 10 desktops. We will need a couple Linux virtual machines and mostly Windows virtual machines. I'd like to use all thin clients if at all possible. Can anyone give me some advice/pointers on choosing a thin client? At least a couple of the clients will need to push multi-monitor displays. Also, what type of cost am I looking at here, assuming 1 server and a few thin clients? I've got a general idea from what I've read so far, but, I feel like I'm missing something.

Laptops are also an issue. I'd like users to be able to connect via their laptops. Will this be a problem?

The other issue is Macintosh deployment. We need one Mac. I'd love to virtualize it just like everything else. From what I've read, though, it doesn't seem like virtual machines running any Mac OS are possible. Can someone shed some light on this?

I forgot to also ask about bandwidth requirements for VDI. If I'm going to go with a centralized sever setup this would make a big difference for me. What are reasonable estimates as far as speed requirements and bandwidth per month usage, assuming 5 users working 9am-5pm, web browsing / e-mail / document creation.

    Thanks guys.

Okay, one final question: Can I use VMWare Server for this small of a project or would I have to use VMWare ESX?

VDI is supported on ESX only.

I realize VMWare only provides support for VDI on ESX since VMWare Server is free, etc. However, I'm asking if any one has experience with a project like this on VMWare Server.
