  • Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Licensing on VMWare Server

    Hello all!

I know that if using MS VM R2, if the host is running Windows 2003 Enterprise and you have paid for the license for it, you can run upto 4 guests (Windows 2003 Enterprise) without paying for additional 4 licenses for the guests.
Is this the same case when you're using VMWare Server?

I caution my answer with "I am not a Microsoft licensing specialist and you would have to contact them for the legal answer".

Still- here is a Microsoft paragraph from a licensing doc that I believe answers this question-
Each software license allows you to run, at any one time, one instance of the server software in a physical OS environment and up to four instances of the server software in virtual OS environments on a particular server.
Now that "virtual OS environment", in my mind could be VMware Server, ESX, XEN, Virtual Iron, or other. The doc doesn't say anything different nor does it mention MS Virtual server as being the only "virtual OS environment" that can be used.

    I hope that helps...
