  • Problem after converting NT4.0 machine

    Hi,

I have converted one NT 4.0 machine to VM (using P2V converter, hot migration). But after migration, i found that one drive is missing in VM. I am unable to see any details related to this in log files.

    Any clue?

    Thanks!

    HI charlsteve,

When you did the conversion, there was a part that showed the drives on the remote system that will be converted. Was the drive that is missing shown there?

I would suggest trying the conversion again with VMware Converter and see what you see in that section. Perhaps you just need to check the missing drive to have it converted along with the boot drive.

Let us know how it goes!

If you are referring here to do the conversion by booting with the converter CD, then my answer is YES I tried this. I am getting the below error at the after starting the import machine wizard

"This virtual machine contains NTFS volumes formatted by Windows NT4. If you proceed with the import process, these volumes will be upgraded to NTFS5.1, used by windows 2000 and later"

Here i have canceled the import wizard and started conversion by installing the conversion tool in the server. Also while selecting drives list, i haven't missed any !!

One more thing i observed is, drive letters swapped between three drives which made me surprise

Re: Problem after converting NT4.0 machine

        Hi there,

The converter has a lot of holes in it - in my opinion. It hangs to often, gets unexplained errors, and, sometimes, just plain doesn't work.

So, I believe you, that you didn't miss any drives - just a thought..

As I have never run across this, I am not sure the cause but I did find some interesting posts on the topic-

        http://www.vmware.com/community/thre...635841&#635841
        http://www.vmware.com/community/thre...643845&#643845
        http://www.vmware.com/community/thre...579623&#579623

One of these recommends installing converter directly on the box being converted.
Someone else resolve their NT4 conversion issues by reinstalling SP4 (?)

Here is the search screen I am using-

Maybe someone else in there is having a similar problem or perhaps one of their resolutions will help you out.

Let us know how it goes.

Anyone else have any ideas on this one?

        All the best to you,
