  • Virtual PC 2007 - very slow installing Windows Server 2008 (32 bit)

I'm installing a virtual machine as a guest machine within Virtual PC 2007, and, it is noted to be very slow. Installation of the 32-bit version of Windows Server 2008 (trial) is taking over 4 hours to complete. The underlying OS on the guest is Windows Server 2008 (64 bit). Having left the installation over 24 hours, the installation was still completing by the following day; which is simply ridiculous. Overnight I had stopped Eclipse and all Java-related threads that I was running.

    One may note that:

    1. I cannot use Hyper-V due to an unresolved issue whereby the network interface (NIC) on the virtual machine does not interface with the guest machine.
    2. Somehow I am limited to installing 32 bit operating systems as guests within Virtual PC 2007.

It seems to be stuck while the OS is 'expanding files', hence, during the hard disk operations. Eclipse, JVM , and, Java programs are also running on the machine, however, even when Eclipse and java are idle, speed is not noted to improve.

    Has anyone encountered similar issues?

    AMD Athlon 64x2 4600+ 2.40Ghz
    4Gb RAM

    Memory ~50% is free
CPU Usage ~60% peaks to >90%

    Any ideas?

What version of VPC are you using (exact build)? Also, have you installed 32 or 64 bit version of VPC?

VirtualPC 2007 supports only 32Bit guest OSes. It is not somehow, but by design ...

Do you see this behavior on any other virtual machine? Have you tried to install another OS just for giggles? I'm trying to narrow down if it's a problem with VPC or the installation media (could it be a dirty / scratched CD? Or is this an ISO, in which case, is it corrupted?).
