  • Windows XP install trouble

Ok, so Microsoft's VPC downloads great and I set it up for an XP virtual machine with 128mb of RAM and 10GB of space on the virtual HD, and it boots ok to the XP installation disk, it even loads all the necessary drivers, but once it hits the "starting windows XP setup" my computer crashes. Here are my specs.

    Dell Optiplex 740
    Windows Vista ultimate
    X86 based
    AMD 64 X2 dual core
    BIOS version 1.1.8 6/08/07
    1 Gb of RAM

I know on other Dell systems, such as the Optiplex 755's the SATA/ATA must be checked to allow windows XP installation to boot, or else the system blue screens, but I highly doubt this is my problem.

I really don't know what else it could be, any help would be appreciated

does that mean that the host crashes? The Vista? Or the guest?
If the hosts crashes, please check the Event log for any clues.
If the guest crashes, please open the created VMC file in Notepad and save it as TXT file and post it here.

What else have you got loading when Vista boots? Seems a bit light on the RAM.
      1 1 was a racehorse.
      2 2 was 1 2.

The host running vista crashes, and I checked the event log and all is says is that there was a unexpected shutdown. I do agree this computer does have a very small amount of RAM, but even still it should be able to handle the 128mb required by the windows XP virtual machine. nothing else starts up with vista. I'll try and find some more RAM laying around, but it is just a work computer so we'll see.

Your VMC file shows you set 256MB RAM for the VM... That is indeed too much !
Correct the setting and try to start the XP VM again...

what should I set it too? I first tried it with 128 mb and it still crashed my machine.

P.S. I lied my machine has 2 gigs of RAM not 1

What is the exact Event Viewer error?

Uninstall Virtual PC 2007, reboot and then reinstall VPC 2007. Then recreate your XP VM using the existing VHD. Don't forget to install the VM Tools.

                Post back with the results.

Cool, Brian. I am glad you solved the problem.
I'd be glad if you could post the exact solution: how did you saw it's the BIOS and to what version you upgraded it to ... For the sake of the next generations, you know

the old BIOS was like 1.1.8 and the new (which came out very recently) is 2.1.3 I think.
