  • start Virtual Server virtual machine

I have 2003 server that should be reinstalled.
Suddenly IIS server is dead (trying to troubleshoot with the help on 2003 server forum).
    IIS could be not recoverable.
I have 2 Virtual machines that are running well but without IIS are not accessible through IE.

    The question:
is there a way to start virtual machine without Console?

I would like to convert those machines to VMWARE. But in order to do that I need to shutdown them.
In worst case I need to start those machines.

    Thanks.
    Michael.

Re: start Virtual Server virtual machine

Your best solution is to use Virtual Machine Remote Control Client Plus to manage the virtual machines without need of IIS. The best will be for you to install the application on the host itself, although you can install it on your machine and manage it from remote.

        Good luck.
Please post back with the results, for future reference.

Re: start Virtual Server virtual machine

          Works great!
I installed the client on local host.

          Couple of questions:
          1. I cannot find the option for changing virtual disk in settings.
I can change the memory size assigned to Virtual machine.

          2. I try to convert MS Virtual Server machine to VMWARE but get the error:
VPC config file could not be parsed.
I copied virtual machine in shutdown state to other machine.
May be it's better to ask this question on VMWare forum?

          3. On MS site:
In Overview of Virtual Server 2005 R2
"The most cost-effective server virtualization technology is now available as a free download."
Is it really free or just free download?
The version that is installed now is:
          v.1.1.465.356 SE R2
It was installed 2 years ago by previous guy. I can not find the hardcopy of license for Virtual Server 2005. That's why I am asking.
I guess it always was a comercial product.

          Thanks for the tip.

It's not there... Click the virtual machine you want to set and click the "Virtual Disks" button above (see the attached screenshot).

What tool are you using for this operation? What process?

I am not sure I see the difference between the two. Yes, the Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 is free of charge. You can download it and install it without any need of license. You do need licenses for the host OS and for the guest OS(es). If you buy the 2003 Server Enterprise, you can install up to four Windows virtual machines without a need of license. And you can manage your virtual machines with VMRC, that is also free.
