  • Virtual Machine Manager (VMM)

Hello to all members interested in MS Virtual Server,

I thought I would tell you a little about a product I tried recently that is interesting and unique. I tried out the free Beta of Microsoft's Virtual Machine Manager (found at this URL http://www.microsoft.com/systemcente...m/default.mspx. This is a centralized interface for rapidly deploying Microsoft Virtual Machines and load balancing VM's.

It took a lot of work to get this working - many hours. I had to install the following:
    - Win 2003 Server R2 (make sure it is R2) - this can be downloaded as an eval
    - Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 (formerly called WinFX).
    - Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 1
    - Windows Server 2003 R2 Hardware Management Tool
    - Windows PowerShell RC1

All of these are either free or available in beta.

When I was all done, here are some of the things that I was able to do:
    - install Virtual Server on a Win 2003 server, remotely, as long as it was a member of the domain.
    - create template for configurations and template VHD's for VM's and roll them out to the virtual server
    - report on status of all virtual machines in the domain that are stopped or started, as an example.
    - you can setup a self service portal so that users with proper security can perform these types of tasks on their assigned VM's.
    - perform VMRC remote control on any virtual machine in the VS farm
    - create a library of VHD's and ISO files that can be used to create new VM's.
    - create templ

This reminds me of what VMware's virtual center does for vmware virtualized machines.

With the beta, the documentation is incomplete. I think it is a product that shows some promise and would be a great took if it will be free in the end.

If you have thoughts or comments, feel free to post.

    Thanks
    David

          Cheers for the information David.

That sounds really cool. I like the idea of being able to allow your 'L'users to rebuilding their own servers which out the help of the IT department.

Sounds like it has real potential

Is it like VirtualCenter for VMware Server?
