  • 2012 r2 - best way to use lots of drives?

    Hi all,

I will be getting a server that will have 12 drives. My goal is to get a good balance of speed and redundancy. Looking at costs, I am leaning towards near line drives.

    Disks:

    1&2 - mirror for OS
3 - hot spare for OS
    4 - 10 - six drive raid 10 - storage for VMs
    11 - 12 - hot spares for raid 10

drives are all NL-SAS 7,200 3tb drives. By some weird coincidence these are the most cost-effective drives I've found.

    Thoughts? Suggestions?

    Rob

Sounds ok providing you can take the hit on the reduced storage using mirroring. We use Raid 1 for OS and on our SAN, Tier 1 is Raid 10 and does host the CSVs used by our Hyper-V Clusters.

How many IOPS do your VM's/workloads require? See here for determining how many IOPS your configuration is capable of:

Thanks for all the info - still working on the "what ifs."

As for the Nearline drives - I am paranoid about them since I have always used either old-time scsi or SAS. But getting 3tb at a serious price break makes me want get them.

Anyone have any issues with nearline drives in Hyper-V? Exchange?

        Thanks,
        Rob
