  • Backup server 2000 - SQL, guest

    Hey all,

    I am running Hyper-v on Server 2008 R2,
One of my guests is Server 2000 with an SQL DB on it.

How would you recommend backing it up freely?

I dont have (or going to buy) any backup software.
I thought about writing a PS script that will:
    1. Shut down the guest
    2. Copy the VHD file to an external destination
    3. Bring the guest back up

What other options do I have that will not damage the SQL DB.

    Thanks!

IIRC Altaro backup is free for up to 2 VMs:
    http://www.altaro.com/hyper-v/

Alternatively, just backup the guest OS using NTBackup and the SQL Databases using the SQL Server Internal backup

        I'm also,
That is why i'm trying so hard to find a solution that will be good enough.
It's for a customer of mine and the budget is very low on his side.

        Ossian,
I look take a look, Thanks!

It all comes down to your SLA but personally, in your position, I'd use a SQL maintenance job to backup SQL as previouly recommended. When it comes to restore, re-build the VM from scratch including SQL and restore the DBs. You need to docuemnt this process and test and ensure that the time matches the SLA. You also need to see what type of restore ability they require and how granular this needs to be.
