  • Tech Support in general for Hyper-V

I mentioned in another thead about my NIC drivers that I'm looking at changing our virtualization setup. One thing I'm comparing side by side is tech support options and costs. I'm having a hell of a time trying to nail down what's available for Hyper-V though.

This being a Windows role, is support just part of Windows server support? If so what are the options for this? Is it annual fee, subscriton to MSDN/TechNet, I'm so lost here. I think it'll be a large CON for us when all others provide phone/e-mail/web ticket support.

    Any help would be great!

hyper v is an integral part of windows 2008 R2.
    Hyper V role support in
    Windows 2008 R2 standard - 1 free VM license
Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise- 4 free VM license
Windows 2008 R2 Datacenter- unlimited free VM license

when you purchae windows, it shipped with virtual key. Insert the virtual key in VM when doing the windows activation inside the vm.

support for windows-based systems is based on PSS cases if I understand correctly.

Essentially - it's pay-per-use. However, I find most people only use it for serious problems. Otherwise, there's plenty of forums like here, and technet, where you can ask queries on things.

It is worth buying Technet Plus -- IIRC you get two free PSS cases, so if you use them, it has paid for itself!

Thanks guys. I'm more worried about major downs of a production system where I NEED someone immediatly type support. I prefer forums for the usual day to day stuff as you mentioned.

When you say TechNet Plus pays for itself after 2 calls, what is the cost of the pay per incident calls then?!

EDIT: Guess it's around $600 as seen here then: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../hh442910.aspx

Appears to be US$200-250 so $350 for TechNet+Direct is less than 2 calls
