    Re: Restore Problem for VM

    Dependent mainly on architecture.

    By this I mean:

Windows Backup will restore any data, to any host. As long as it can read the source and write to the destination. This level of it isn't really architecture specific.
It doesn't see the VM as a VM. At least, not exactly. It just sees it as backup files.

It's similar to th way backup exec, for instance, can have backup exec running on a 32 bit server, but using remote agent, can backup a 64 bit server.
As long as the backup application itself is relevant to the architecture, it'll work.

    HOWEVER.
From there, it actually depends on the configuration of your guest.
If you're backing up a x64 guest, and trying to restore it to an x32 host, it's not going to work.
sure, the files will restore correctly. HyperV will probably even see the guest.
But when you try and start it, it will fail, and tell you that it's not a 64bit capable host.

    does that make sense?

The quick answer is no because the Hyper-V role is 64 bit only. But what are you using to backup the VM?
