  • Assigning a dedicated physical NIC to VM

I have have a Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V server. I do not have a separate NIC for administration. One NIC is enabled and the other disabled. Both VMs connect to the virtual switch.

I have SQL Server 2008 on one of the VMs. Would I be better off to bind this VM to its own dedicated physical NIC rather than connecting it to the virtual switch? I have SBS 2011 running on the other VM.

    Thanks,

I don't think you'd gain a huge amount of benefit, unless you really have a need (security for instance) to have them on separate physical interfaces.

The likelyhood of SBS2011 and SQL server both needing a sustained burst at 1Gb/sec is fairly low..

Gather a performance baseline and look at whether they are acceptable limits to meet your SLA.
