  • Migrate a physical to virtual

is there a way to migrate a physical windows 2003 R2 standard server to a virtual server?

I have installed Win2k8 R2, Standard, 64 bit with Hyper-V. Created a new virtual server for testing, works just great.

Now I want to migrate a physical server, which is a 32 bit server with windows 2003 r2 standard already installed, and which is active. So I want to make that win2k3 server a virtual one in my new virtual enviroment.

    How can I do this?

i think SCVMM might let you do it

if I remember correctly, my colleague did it at my previous job
he set up a workstation with software on it, then did a conversion of the physical, onto an existing hyperv host

A complete setup of scvmm is an overkill for a single host. Just use the microsoft disk2vhd tool. Create the vhd, and then create a vm witch the vhd attached.

Re: Migrate a physical to virtual

Yep - disk2vhd worked well for me as well.

I was a bit suspicious at first as it's such a lightweight tool, but I've tested with a full SBS 2003 installation and it came up absolutely fine in the virtual environment - all services started fine and everything worked. I would probably recommend stopping services for transactional databases, including exchange and SQL.

We've since used in production and it works well!
