  • SCVMM can't connest to esx host

    Hey all,

I downloaded the SCVMM 2008 R2 to test out as we are looking to move to hyper-v for our virtualization. We currently are using ESXi 4.0 to run a handful of machines. I am looking to convert these machines over to our hyper-v box. So anyway, I got SCVMM all up and running on my server 2k8 R2 box. I can connect to the hyper-v server no problem. I can then connect to the virtual center server (my esxi machine). I enter the details (ip, user, pass) and "ha-datacenter" shows up under the Host Groups panel. Now, when I go to "add host" in the Action pane I enter the name of my esxi server, enter my user/pass, import the certificate but then I always get this error--

    Error (2949)
Virtual Machine Manager cannot complete the VirtualCenter action on server xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx because of the following error: The operation is not supported on the object. (NotSupported).
    (Unknown error (0x194))

    Recommended Action
This error occurs when a function contains an invalid argument. Resolve the issue and then try the operation again.

I've tried digging around on the internet. I am sure I missed something along the way. If anyone has a good tutorial on managing esxi 4.0 from scvmm, please link it to me. Any help is appreciated!

AFAIK you have to add your vCenter server and not your ESX(i) servers.

Hmm... well I am not running vCenter server. I am just running the free esxi server using the vsphere client to manage it. I just want those VMs off of esxi and onto the hyper-v machine.

You can do P2V inside the VMguests or do a V2V.

I tried that converter earlier and it didn't work. P2V did work though so that is the route I am going to take. Thanks.
