  • Bad internet response and connection after switching Internet provider

A client with a 2012R2 environment with a Virtual 2012R2 host with essential pack and a second virtual 2012R2 host with Exchange 2013 switch from internet provider.

They first had an ADSL connection with 3-4mbit down and 600kb up. They switched to a fiber connection with a 50/50 connection. The mail incoming and outgoing is working fine. Browsing on the fileserver works fine to.

The Windows 8 clients however have troubles reaching several sites. When i try these on the fileserver, they work correctly.

What could this be? What adjustments do i have to make to the DNS server after changing fro internet provider?

If the DNS server is configured to use Forwarders make sure they're the correct ones.

Re: Bad internet response and connection after switching Internet provider

When i look at the properties of the DNS server and go to the tab forward server (i have a Dutch version so i translated it, might have a different name in English though) there is only the Router there on IP 192.168.110.254

That is the same IP the previous router had. The new one is also a Draytek only a newer and beter model, the 2925.

      Is this correct?

Use your ISP's DNS servers for the forwarders in DNS rather than your router.

I now have 4 DNS forwarders.

          IP DNS 1 from ISP
          8.8.4.4 from Google
          IP DNS 2 from ISP
          IP from router

i will test it and let it know. On the server i still have a fast connection. The clients are the problem.

What DNS servers do the clients get?
They should only have your DCs

Re: Bad internet response and connection after switching Internet provider

              they are getting two DNS

first the fileserver with DNS server
              Second 8.8.4.4

i'll remove the second and test it.

              [edit]

after removing the second DNS most sites still don't work while others do work. If i test the sites that don't work on the server the do work.

              [edit 2]

just deinstalled the DNS server and installed it again. did not work either.

What DNS is DHCP dishing out?
                1 1 was a racehorse.
                2 2 was 1 2.

Re: Bad internet response and connection after switching Internet provider

DHCP is now only pointing to it's own DNS server

                  192.168.110.1

When i add or don't add 8.8.4.4 it makes no difference.

Re: Bad internet response and connection after switching Internet provider

i ran two tracert from a workstation on location. One to www.hotmail.com, a site that works and one to www.telegraaf.nl , a site that does not work. The tracert to Hotmail is finishing after 18 hops and the tracert to www.telegraaf.nl times out.

Is this an internet provider problem or could this still be a local problem???

Re: Bad internet response and connection after switching Internet provider

DNS is resolving the name to an IP address successfully, so DNS does not seem to be the issue. I would talk to the ISP and see if they have any explanation

You originally said you could reach the site from the server - is that still the case?

Make sure you have the speed and duplex settings correct on your WAN interface. Often the ISP does not have auto negotiate enabled so you'll need to get the settings from them. (often it's 100mbps/full duplex or 1000mbps/full duplex)

Can you post an ipconfig /all from the server and client.

To add to JeremyW's post also check the MTU and set it correctly.
