  • 2003 WSUS in 2012 Enviorment

    Hello all,

I'd like to utilize a Server 2003 CAL we already own to deploy a windows updates services box.
It seems like a good use rather than wasting a 2008/12 license.

Just wondering if I'll see any issues in a Server 2012 domain environment, Windows 7 clients.

Unsure if 2003 is capable of providing patches to newer OS's.

    Thoughts?

    Thank you!

I have not tried that particular combination, but generally have had no problem with WSUS (3.0 SP2) on older servers supporting newer ones - 2008R2 to 2012R2 was OK.

If you already have 2012 servers in house then it can be very easily added to one of them rather than using old software to manage it.

For what its worth we have our 2012 servers updating successfully from a 2003 WSUS server.

We will be updating this soon though.

Is it really worth doing this until July when 2003 goes full EoS ?
Also, what sort of licence is it? FPP, OEM or VLK?
If it's an OEM or FPP it may be tied to a physical device which means you can't reuse it anyway
