  • Activation of a 2012 R2 VM on a 2012 Host

    Hello,

I have a Windows 2012 Server Standard with an OEM licence key. This server is an Hyper-V host with only 1 VM on it.
I just installed a new VM with Windows 2012 R2 Standard but the server won't activate the licence.

Is there a way to activate it the way it is? or is the only solution upgrading my host to R2 (i would prefer not to since i can't reboot easily) ? Using the OEM key i got with the host doesn't work.

    Thanks for reading

AFAIK you will need a 2012R2 key - note you do not need to upgrade the host, just have a valid license for 2012R2 (you are effectively using downgrade rights on the host)

R2 is not the same as 2012. Same as 2008 is not 2008 R2.

You will require a new licence.
