  • Mixed KMS and AD activations Win 7, Office 2010, Server 2012 and 2012 R2

    Hi,
    I have a mixed environment.
    KMS Server - 2008 R2 runs Win 7 and Office 2010 Licencing.
AD is managing Volume Licencing for Server 2012. All my existing DCs are Server 2012.
Now I am deploying Server 2012 R2, and the licence activation requires patch KB2885698.
The question is, where do I put the patch? It's not clear in the KB article (unless I have missed it). Do I need to put this patch on all of my DCs as it's AD integrated? Or just the DC I am running the Volume Activation tool on? I have applied it to the 2008 R2 KMS Server, but I'm not sure that was necessary.

    Thanks

    Ian

      Hi,
      Thanks for your reply.
I have applied the the patch to the KMS host, but when I try to add the KMS Key using the Volume Activation Tool into Active Directory (Not KMS), it still reports the same error as reported in KB2885698.
So, do I need to apply the patch to my DCs?

      Thanks

Are you at Windows Server 2012 Forest and Domain level?

          Hi,
          I have resolved this now.
A number of issues were clouding the resolution. I have listed the full list of what I had to do after installing KB2885698 below in case anyone else is struggling. Thanks biggles77 for your pointer, sometimes a nudge towards more documentation can make you think outside the box a little.

AD schema was already updated to 2012 R2.
To do this you must be an Enterprise Admin as this publishes the licences to the forest.

Add "Volume Activation Tools" to the server as a feature.

          Internet access is required.
          Turn Off Windows Firewall temporarily.
Turn Off Windows Enhanced Security for IE
Add the proxy details (in my case a PAC file to IE)
Check internet access to web address ie Google

Open the "Volume Activation Tools" application AS AN ADMINISTRATOR ensuring you are logged on as Enterprise Admin.

Connect to Active Directory-Based Activation, and install the new KMS Key.
