  • Server2012 and exchange 2013

we presently have sbs2003 and 8 win xp pc's and need to upgrade.
Is it correct that I can't or should not install exchange on server 2012 essentials.
If so, can I install exchange on the same physical 2012 standard server - I have read that you need 2 separate servers or a virtual environment?

It is recommended to not install Exchange on a Domain Controller and in your case, I take it that the 2012 server will be a DC. In some circumstances, it does happen for small environments.

Will you be using a new physical server for the upgrade?

For that small an environment, I would look seriously at getting hold of SBS 2011 (Server 2008R2/Exchange 2010) for the ease of management.

Agreed, Exchange should not be on a DC (except SBS) although you can do it - just don't make/break a DC with exchange on it!

yes I agree that sbs2011 would be easier to manage for this scenario. I am proposing this for a customer and wondering what reasons I can give to him to go for sbs2011 rather than win2012 as he will look on in as a retrograde step? Sbs2011 is 3 years old at this stage. when will MS stop providing updates and no longer support it I wonder?

Well that's bloody helpful.........NOT. (Not your post Blood but Microsoft's info )

Josh, your hardware will need replaced before SBS2011 is retired. With all vendors seeming to have a hard on for Cloud based services I would seriously consider SBS2011 as the better option and it only requires 1 Server rather than 2 Servers for the DC and another for Exchange under Server 2012/Server 2010 R2. Just my opinion.
