Re: Backup of ADS in 2012

Moved from AD forum to Server 2012.

A lot of missing information that might lead to an acceptable answer:
    How many servers?
    What backup medium?
    What retention periods?
    How much data?
What recovery time SLA and allowable data loss?
    What backup budget?

For a zero cost option, Windows Server Backup may not be the best, but the price is good.
I have had mixed results with Backup Assist and Backup Exec, but have heard very good things about CommVault in larger enterprises.

Oh, any spammers who pop up with their very first post to push some commercial product had better watch out

      How many servers? 3
      What backup medium? Portable HDD
What retention periods? Daily backup. Previous 7 backups to be retained. For example as on 1st April, the data as of 25,26,27,28,29,30,31 March should be available. One weekly data for example 7th,14th and 21st to be retained as well. After few motnhs this weekly data folders can be deleted and last backup taken in January,February and March can only be retained. That's the approximate data cycle.
      How much data? 75 GB
What recovery time SLA and allowable data loss? Data Recovery time less than a day. Data loss unacceptable. Every file is expected to be restored.
What backup budget? About 5 Portable Hard Drives. 1TB or more.

      Thanks.

OK, the "data loss unacceptable" will blow all this out of the water. With daily backups, you may lose data from the point of the last backup.

Personally, on that sort of scale/budget, I would use Windows Server backup, combined with Shadow Copies and (obviously) RAID to reduce losses to a few hours.

            Shadow copies are easy:

Plan a bit about frequency, but they give a quick, easy recovery option
