  • Hidden$ shares not accessible - anyone using them server 2012 R2?

    Server 2012 R2 with win 7 clients.

For some reason none of the hidden shares (\\Server\Profile$) are accessible from the client machines. We can connect to them fine from the server but not from the client side.

Not a firewall issue, I have tried with that turned off.

Not a security issue, "Everyone" has full share permissions and NTFS permissions.

Nothing in event logs to denote an error, checked System, Application, Security.

Have tried creating new shares and same issue, all ok until make it hidden then access is denied!

Is this a server 2012 R2 issue? Test exactly the same thing in server 2012 and all works fine, just on R2 that the problems exist.

Is there anyone out there using hidden$ shares in 2012 R2 and got it working?

Make sure on the property of the hiddent share folder have the following:

Share tab permission -> Everyone (full)
Security tab permssion -> Everyone or domain users (full)

Yep, just for testing "Everyone" has already been given Full NTFS and Share permissions. I have even setup a couple of new shares, one hidden one not both exactly same permissions. Same problem non hidden one is fine but hidden one is simply not accessible.

Have you seen this thread on Microsoft's forums:

Same issue, but the person got further than your thread on Spiceworks.

Very interesting Blood, no I hadn't found that thread before. Will try out some of the suggestions raised and post back results.

          Many thanks,

No answer yet. Waiting for customer to find time to attach a machine to the new server and test. Will post back when I have an answer.

Re: Hidden$ shares not accessible - anyone using them server 2012 R2?

Answer now found, well more of a workaround than a full explanation.

Had to add extra NTFS permissions to \\Server\Profile$ share:

                • Read extended attributes
                • Read permission

We were using the default Microsoft recommended default permissions for a roaming profile share of:
                • List Folder/Read Data
                • Create Folders/Append Data

But for some reason that isn't enough for the users to see the share. This raises the question of why these extra permissions were necessary and whether Microsoft need to change their recommended permissions for Roaming User Profiles.

Also needed to disable on the share:
                • Encrypt data Access

Now at long last all shares working properly, hope this helps someone else solve this in the future.

Doing the offline files cache clear-out certainly helped things to work more predictably but didn't solve the problem.
