  • windows 2012 forest domain rename

I have to expand our current Windows 2012 network, which was setup by previous sysadmin .
The problem is that my current forest and root domain is child.domain.com it should be domain.com
The goal is to keep child.domain.com as a child domain but root forest should be domain.com
So is it possible to rename the root forest domain, but still keep that domain name as a child domain for existing domain users ?
Basically I want only rename the forest domain name and keep current domain name as child domain name .
the goal is if I need to create more child domain in existing tree they will be :
    newname.domain.com and not newdomain.child.domain.com
    Hope that makes sense.
never done domain rename before , thanks in advance

child.domain.com is the Forest root domain. You can rename it but you can't make it a child domain of itself.
