  • 2003 AD FSMO Move to 2012 R2, existing 2008 Server...?

Can I move the 2003 AD and FSMO to the new 2012 R2 server with an existing 2008 BKUP DC in the environment? Thank you

As far as I can see (e.g. https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/...ws-server-2012) you can introduce a 2012R2 DC as long as your existing domain is at 2003 functional level (same for forest). The presence of the 2008 additional DC (there is no such thing as a backup DC) will make no difference as long as you don't try raising the FLs above 2008. Since you have other DCs you will have to manually transfer the FSMOs to the new DC, if done automatically they could end up on any suitable DC.
