  • FTP SIte to be accessed via internet

The customer need to share files with their head office and office in other locations via internet. There is no firewall or vpn configured.

What will be the difference in File Server and FTP server and which will be best. How can we make the FTP Server or File Server to be accessible via internet to other locations and kindly guide me what will be the method to manage users for providing permissions to these files. Can that be achieved by creating local user in the computer and providing permissions to the corresponding folders. Can we provide public IP directly to the server and in that scenario if it need to accessed via local internet what can be done.

Please help me out and this is an urgent requirement.

To use file shares, you will need some sort of VPN (or Direct Access) configured unless you leave your whole network insecure. FTP can be secured more easily, but is more complex to use

Have you considered a third party VPN solution such as Hamachi ( which is easy to configure, secure (you control who has access) and allows file-share like browsing and upload/downloads?
