    I have a HP ProLiant DL380G8 server running a HP P410 RAID controller. The Raid controller has x3 logical volumes, each in RAID1 (mirror). They are as follows:

    Volume1
    70GB (slot 1) 70GB Disk
    70GB (slot 2) 70GB Disk

    Volume2
    300GB (slot 3) 300GB Disk
    300GB (slot 4) 300GB Disk

    Volume3
    600GB (slot 5) 600GB Disk
    606GB (slot 6) 600GB Disk


    A colleague had a task to increase Volume3 (600GB) to 900GB. The process was to pull the disk out of slot 5 & replace with a 900GB disk.

    Wait for the data to mirror

    Then pull the disk out of slot 6 & replace with a 900GB disk.

    Wait for the data to mirror

    Expand Volume3 from the HP Array Configuration Utility (ACU)

    Increase the drive in Windows.


    However, instead of pulling disks in slot 5 & 6, he pulled disks 3 & 4 and mirrored the data on the wrong volume. Realising what he had done, he did not expand Volume2 from the spare space on the HP ACU so the Volume2 is still 300GB with 300GB unassigned space. So the setup now looks like this:

    Volume1
    70GB (slot 1) 70GB Disk
    70GB (slot 2) 70GB Disk

    Volume2
    300GB (slot 3) 900GB Disk
    300GB (slot 4) 900GB Disk
    600GB free space showing on HP ACU

    Volume3
    600GB (slot 5) 600GB Disk
    606GB (slot 6) 600GB Disk



    The question I have is, am I able to reverse the mirroring process and insert the 300GB disks one by one on Volume2 (slots 3 & 4), taking the volume back down to 300GB. Remember the spare space on Volume2 is sill unassigned so it only things 300GB are in use

    Or do we have to bite the bullet and buy more 900GB disks to expand Volume3 as we actually need?

    I'd not swear to this, but I seem to recall several years ago that when rebuilding a RAID 1 volume, the disk should be the same size or larger than the disk it is replacing. Could you get two more 900GB disks? That may be cheaper than someone's time researching it, then attempting to sort this out. Or, you could copy the data elsewhere, create a new volume using the 300GB disks and copy it back again. I'd just buy two 900GB disks and have done with it.
