  • Virtual Domain Controller consuming large amounts of memory

I have a VMware 5.5 virtual server which is using around 99% of its 4GB of memory. The server is running Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard and is a domain controller.

In the VMware Performance screen, CPU is sitting at 40% and Memory is sitting at 95%, but I keep getting the VMware alert "SERVERAD01, Warning, Virtual machine memory usage, VCENTRE.mydomain.com, 3/5/2015 8:00:17 AM".

I've checked the Resource Monitor, and here's what it shows for Commit (KB):

    MonitoringHost.exe: 104,020
    mcshield.exe: 96,116
    lsass.exe: 95,264
    dns.exe: 75,844
    mmc.exe: 72,076
    Microsoft.ActiveDirectory.WebServices.exe: 44,544
    svchost.exe (LocalServiceNetworkRestricted): 44,072

It does not seem that there is one specific process which is consuming the memory.

Here are screenshots from the server:

What does the Processes tab in Task Manager show?

Also why are you running AV on a virtual machine? You should really have something on the Hypervisor that can do this.

Process tab in Task Manager, sorted by memory usage:

Never knew this existed- I'll look into it.

Doesn't look like anything out of the ordinary.

I'd download Process Explorer and see if that shows anything more than Task Manager, very limited IMHO.

Yep there have been hypervisor AV systems in place for a few years. Trend Deep Security is one we use and McAfee has one call McAfee Move.

Surely a snapshot of a clean boot and then comparing it to another after a few hours just may give you an indication of what might be eating your memory (perhaps using PE)? Has it been patched for anything on it that may exhibit memory leaks?
          1 1 was a racehorse.
          2 2 was 1 2.
          1 1 1 1 race 1 day,

Thanks guys. We have to reboot the server every 4 days as it becomes unresponsive so I'll give PE a try.

Based on this, I'll take a "snapshot", I assume using screenshots of the Task Manger, PE and Resource Manager every few days to analyse it.

Re: Virtual Domain Controller consuming large amounts of memory

I rebooted the server and ran Process Explorer and the Commit memory sits around 1.6GB (30%) but the physical memory is the one which concerns me. When I rebooted the server, physical memory sat around 30% then ramped up to, and plateaued at 99% and this seems to be causing an issue. But I don't think PE will be able to solve this issue?

              Here's the just-after-reboot screenshots:

After about 20 minutes, the physical memory usage ramped up:

Re: Virtual Domain Controller consuming large amounts of memory

Have you checked this system for malware/viruses?

Isolate it and remove McAfee, after scanning of course and see what happens.

What else is installed on this system?
