  • Really slow office environment

    Hi all
I am looking for some pointers please.
I am helping a charity who have very limited funds to sort out their office. They have a server running Server 2008 R2 and 8 client machines all running Windows 7 Pro.
The problem they all have is that all the client machines are running really slowly, whether browsing the internet or accessing files on the server.
I have connected a laptop withut joining the domain and it seems to access the internet much better and quicker, obviously I can't access files when not logged onto the domain so I can't tell if would be faster.
I have been asked to go over and see if I can 'speed things up' can anyone point me in the right direction to start looking for problems that might be causing these issues?
The server is set as DNS and DHCP server
    Cheers

            Re: Really slow office environment

the laptop, if it gets the same dhcp details as the workstation, would have the same dns server and potentially be suffering the same problem.

is this a wired, or wireless network ?

the other guys have asked you for ipconfig /all from both the server and the client workstations
could you also provide ipconfig /all from your laptop (the one that works?)

Yes, this smells of DNS issues.

                Re: Really slow office environment

OK so I now have copies of ipconfig/all from 3 machines, the server, a wired client logged on to the domain, and a wireless client not logged onto the domain so with only internet access. All are slower than I would expect but particularly the logged in machine

                  Re: Really slow office environment

I now have another piece of the puzzle, I don't know if this is relevant but I have looked at the DNS manager on the server and in the forward lookup zones a couple of the clients appear twice with different IP addresses but timestamped at exactly the same time so for example...
                  WHS-DT8 Host (A) 192.168.1.59 03/12/2014 10:00:00
                  WHS-DT8 Host (A) 192.168.1.50 03/12/2014 10:00:00

How can that happen and is it related to the slowing of the network?

                    Re: Really slow office environment

Try removing the 4.2.2.2 DNS from the DNS Forwarder tab. I am getting a very slow ping from it. Suggest you use your ISPs DNS IPs and only in the DNS Forwarders tab.

Also remove the 4.2.2.2 from DHCP.
                    1 1 was a racehorse.
                    2 2 was 1 2.
                    1 1 1 1 race 1 day,

Many thanks for your help with this

                        Re: Really slow office environment

Your domain clients should not use public DNS servers at all so suggest you remove 4.2.2.2 from the DHCP scope, just use if (if you do) as a forwarder on the DNS server

                          Re: Really slow office environment

                          start > dnsmgmt.msc
right click on the server and select properties (I assume youonly have one server here)
                          choose forwarders tab.

                          in mine, i have "8.8.8.8"
click the Edit button on the lower right.
enter a new dns server. ideally, your Internet service providers, or perhaps a firewall between you and the internet if your facility supports this, or the OpenDNS servers.
                          REmove the 4.2.2.1 server.
                          apply, then ok
then restart the dns service and clear the cache.

Also,, based on what you mention, it looks like your clients are connected both wired and wirelessly. Disconnect the wireless. Unless they have a specific need to roam, they shouldn't be using both connections.
If they are laptops that are always at a desk, int he same place, they don't need wireless if they have ethernet.

(*unfortunately, I have a client who tries to use both wired and wireless, depiste the laptops rarely moving))

                            Re: Really slow office environment

                            Open the DNS MMC
Right click on DNS Server name
                            Left click Properties
                            Left click Forwarders tab
                            Left click Edit
Remove the 4.2.2.2 entry and add your ISPs DNS Server IPs. Failing that, 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4

The 2 entries for WHS-DT8 are the 2 NICs that the machine has. One is Ethernet (192.168.1.50) and the 2nd is Wireless (192.168.1.59).
