Re: user can't open same shared file on network

Don't bump your posts - you will get answers when someone reads them and has time to reply

As a guess, the file is locked by the first user - they must close it so the second user can open it

More detail would be useful - what server and client OS, what file format, what is actual error message?

        hi Ossian,
        Thanks for advice...
        server OS is win 2k8R2
        Client OS is win 7
        the file format is .xls
and the exact error is "<Map Drive:\\Share folder$\abc.xls> could not be found. Check the spelling of the file name, and verify that the file location is correct."
When one user open that file....at the same same other user can not open the file...at least it should be open in Read-Only........the file is in share drive...

Re: user can't open same shared file on network

I'm pretty sure there's an extra step you have to take within the application to make it a shared document. Just putting the file in a shared folder doesn't do it.

          Try this: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ex...010096833.aspx

Re: user can't open same shared file on network

No, that is purely allowing multiple editing (via SharePoint)
Normally Excel will allow the first user to open RW from a share, subsequent users get prompted to wait or open read only.

@OP - can you provide a screen shot of the error, also how is the drive mapped (letter or UNC path)
Finally, what Excel version and SP is being used?

Re: user can't open same shared file on network

Well, it has been a while, but I had to do a similar procedure on an Excel workbook on a standard shared drive. Don't be fooled by the ad at the top; the steps used to share the Excel workbook are for any shared network location, not just SharePoint.

                @Ossian...

u r right bro.....first user is open the file with RW... and other users also can open the file but it will in Read only ....

but this is the issue that they can't open it and it gives error the file could not be found....

we are map the drive using UNC path..... and excel version i 2007 with SP3..

                Regards,

Re: user can't open same shared file on network

Are the users that are not able to access the excel file able to access the shared drive at all?
