  • Please help sharing printer across different subnet

Hi I have been tasked with trying to get this set up now. we have a few computers in our office that is on a 192.168.1.0 subnet and the rest including the server and our konica minolta C554 is on a 192.168.2.0 subnet I am looking for an easy way to print from one subnet to the other. I thought I could forward the printer IP over the network but I didn't seem to get that working. I read about enabling IPP services but no luck there either. I am guessing I could buy a print server and configure that but I am sure it is possible to do this without buying anything new. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Re: Please help sharing printer across different subnet

    Have you tried: \\konica minolta C554 IP\sharename ?
    1 1 was a racehorse.
    2 2 was 1 2.
    1 1 1 1 race 1 day,
    2 2 1 1 2

Re: Please help sharing printer across different subnet

Set the printer up with a static ip address, exclude this IP from the DHCP range, or just reserve it by hostname/mac.
Try and ping the IP address of the printer from another subnet and see if you get a response.
If you do, add the printer to a client or server by TCP/IP address or hostname, Devices and Printers, Add Printer, tcp or hostname, add the IP address.
      Send a test print.

Re: Please help sharing printer across different subnet

Can you post the IP details (address, mask and DG) for the printer plus an IPCONFIG/ALL from something else on the same subnet?

Re: Please help sharing printer across different subnet

Hi thanks for the Replys. I have not tried "\\konica minolta C554 IP\sharename" but I will try that and see what happens.

The printer has a static IP of 192.168.2.14 but I can not ping it from a differnt subnet.

Ossian I will try to get the information posted later today.

I figured setting up IPP might be the easiest way to go and it is turned on on the printer but I do not know exactly what the address is. i tried it with the IP:631 and the share name but that did not work.

          thanks again for the help!

            I just tried

            http://192.168.2.14:631/printers/KMBT811845
            and
            http://192.168.2.14/KMBT811845

            neither worked

            also tried

            \\192.168.2.14\KMBT811845

Re: Please help sharing printer across different subnet

If there are any servers visible on both subnets, it may be easiest to set up the printer as a local printer on the server, share it, then print to \\servername\printersharename. That way you aren't trying to reach the printer directly

I can not seem to see the "server01" on the 192.168.2.1 subnet from the any of the 192.168.1.1 computers even though they are getting their internet through the server01

I did also try using the "server01" ip and the printer share name instead of the printer ip, but I did not try the server name since I can not seem to see it from the other subnet (though I would like to have access to it from the other subnet too)

Re: Please help sharing printer across different subnet

also this is more info on the printer
                          IP Address 192.168.2.14
                          Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
                          Default Gateway 192.168.2.2

I finally got admin access to the printer. which has been a problem around here. no one knows any of the admin passwords including the one for the server. So I have had to reset them as I go. The printer says I can add it with IPP using any of these addresses:
                          http://192.168.2.14/ipp
                          http://KMBT811845.xxx.com/ipp
                          ipp://192.168.2.14/ipp
                          ipp://KMBT811845.xxx.com/ipp

I will try that and see if I get anywhere. I would though still like to be able to access folders on the 192.168.2.2 "Server01" from computers on the other subnet

Re: Please help sharing printer across different subnet

Change the default gateway of the printer to 192.168.2.1 (the router is the DG)

What make/model are the routers at
                            192.168.1.1
                            and
                            192.168.2.1

It may be that you need to add routes to each router and possibly edit the access lists for the router interfaces (if any exist)
Does Server01 have a firewall enabled?

Re: Please help sharing printer across different subnet

                              the 192.168.2.1 is a NETGEAR ProSafe™ Gigabit 8 Port VPN Firewall FVS318G
the 192.168.1.1 is a SNAPGEAR but not sure of the model at the moment I can get that later

changing the DG of the printer to 192.168.2.1 wont keep it from working as it is not with the other computers will it?
