  • Can the pagefile be smaller than the amount of server RAM?

On our VNX SAN, I've created a P LUN for our servers with the intent to store the Page File on it. Most of our servers are 32 GB RAM, some are 64 GB and a few are 128 GB RAM so the page file LUNs vary to the say extent.

I now have a need to purchase more disk to cater for new servers but the IT Director has questioned why we are using 32 GB, 64 GB & 128 GB LUNs for the Page file. Apparently he asked the other Sys Eng for stats on the servers as to how much memory they were using and found (thru TaskMan & Resource Monitor) that the servers were using around 15% of their RAM and thus he did not see the need to have the page files so big.

So he wants me to cut the pagefile LUNs down from 32/64/128 to 8/16/32 GB but from what I know, a server with 32 GB RAM should have a 32 GB pagefile not a 8 GB pagefile.

Will his suggestion work OK? He says he doesn't give a "rats" about MS Best Practice for anything.

    Thanks.

You could actually get rid of the pagefile technically, but again not best practice and not generally recommended.

Having a smaller one could work, but without profiling your servers to see what peak load is then we can't answer whether it is technically a good option.

As you say having the same is recommended (in fact same + 300MB is the windows default IIRC).

If your servers have high memory usage then having a much smaller pagefile could cause instability and almost likely application crashes.

If you have over-spec'd your servers and memory utilization % is low anyway, then you could get away with it.

Basically all depends on your server utilization!
