  • Windows Updates Repair

I have a w2k8r2 server that was stopped updating from WSUS. I have changed the WSUS server settings to point to another WSUS server to correct, but the server keeps presenting a message each time the server tries to check for updates .....

"Restart your computer to install important updates - Windows cannot update important files and services while the system is using them...."

I have tried removing all WUServer references in Registry and set back to update directly from MS, but still receiving this error.

Has anyone else run across this error and can point me to a previous post or possible solution? I know I am probably missing something obvious.

Well, I have tried every tip and trick in the book for the error code in WU Logs. I give up for today.

There was a fix it for this, if its the same one.

Our clients would reboot 3 times then fail and on the final reboot work. Each morning they had this.

I'll try and hunt down the article for you if its similar.

Wullieb - I am seeing "error 0x8024d00e" in the log along with "session 65536 is an unknown session type".

I have tried downloading and installing the 3.0 agent package but it fails with an "unrecoverable error" message and won't install.

I hope this is similar to what you have experienced and the fix works.

          Re: Windows Updates Repair

Just so no one else is left hanging with this same issue that I was having.......

I continued to search on line and tried many of the same fixes multiple times, but the darn error code 80070bc9 always showed up in my WindowsUpdate Log no matter what.

I was about one hair left of being bald and rebuilding this server, when I found this fix........

http://superuser.com/questions/46398...error-80070bc9 (scroll down to the very last entry on the page).

In case the webpage ever gets deleted..... here is the fix:

          I fixed it with:

          fsutil resource setautoreset true c:\

Then in safe mode try to delete these files:

          C:\WINDOWS\system32>cd %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine
          C:\WINDOWS\System32\SMI\Store\Machine>attrib -s -h *
          C:\WINDOWS\System32\SMI\Store\Machine>del *.blf
          C:\WINDOWS\System32\SMI\Store\Machine>del *.regtrans-ms
          C:\WINDOWS\system32\SMI\Store\Machine>cd %SystemRoot%\System32\config\TxR
          C:\WINDOWS\System32\config\TxR>attrib -s -h *
          C:\WINDOWS\System32\config\TxR>del /q *

Reboot and it worked like a charm!

Of course, you will need to re-run you wuauclt.exe /resetauthorization /detectnow switches again to get conversation going again between the client and the WSUS server.

          Issue resolved!
