  • strange HD utilisation

    Hello,
I have a strange issue with Server 2008 C: capacity display
The machine is VM on VMware 5.

When select all files on C: (hidden included) it shows 20GB. When right click on C: it's 50GB (see pic).
I see that it is growing up about 500MB/day.
A month and half ago the machine was migrated to a new host and Storage.

I decided to ask the question here because it is Server 2008 and sure there are VMware people here.

How this effect could be explained?

    Thx.

The discrepancy is usually caused by not having permissions on files and folders and so you can't enumerate the size. Running with elevated permissions might give you a closer number but there are things in the System Volume Information (and other places) that only the system account has permissions over.

What backup solution are you using for the VM? I've had backup software that mismanaged VSS snapshots which caused them to retain large ones daily.

I'm not familiar with that solution... but for fun, on the VM run this command:

        Code:
        vssadmin list shadowstorage
This should tell you how much space VSS is taking up.

            Re: strange HD utilisation

Looks like the issue doesn't related to Backup soft.
I restored first backup of the machine after migration to a new host/storage.
And the free space was 4 GB. So it's collected 4GB in 1 month. That is a lot too but looks like the problem started before the new Backup solution.
I will access System Volume of the restored machine and will take a look what is a content. Then will be easier to identify the source of the problem

            Thanks.

              Re: strange HD utilisation

it turned out that IIS extended log filled up the partition
was weird Windows storage capacity presentation.
But when mounted VMDK, one right click was telling the story...

              Thanks for tips.

Ah, the good ol' IIS logs.
A tool I like to use to see what's taking up space on a drive is Spacemonger 1.4
                http://www.sixty-five.cc/download/
They have a newer version but the free one works great for me.... not sure if they'll be around much longer.

                Thanks for posting back!
