    Are you upgrading your domain?

Adprep is only required if you are upgrading the AD Schema for a DC.

      thanks for responding

what I want to do is add the 2008 and a backup to the 2003 and remove the 2003 from service and make the 2008 the primary AD/DC unless you have a better idea as to how replace my 2003 with a 2008

      thanks

Not the right way to do it IMO.

        Here's what I would do:

        1. Run Adprep32 on your Server 2003 R2 server.
        2. Check and make sure the schema has been updated.
        3. Add your 2008 R2 machine as a member server.
        4. Promote your 2008 R2 machine and allow replication to occur between both servers. Configure 2008 R2 as a GC.
        5. Once happy demote 2003 R2 machine, this should move all the FSMO roles to the 2008 R2 box.
        6. Decomission from the domain.

Pretty broad steps but should be general enough to help you on your way.

I haven't heard of any issues but as always make sure you have a good valid backup in place before doing it.

Ensure you run a DCDIAG prior to carrying it out and backup the System State data of the DC and you should be ok.

If DNS and DHCP is also hosted on the 2003 R2 DC, you also need to migrate that, so a case of just making the 2008 R2 a DNS server as well and then re-point Primary DNS server for DHCP Clients and other devices such as servers at the Windows 2008 R2 server.

                Thanks

                So I

                backup
                run DCDIAG
                then
                Run ADPREP32

                thanks

That's right. After ADPREP32, run another DCDIAG as well.

Effectively, ensure you save the DCDIAG results to a TXT file for comparison purposes.

There are logs you can also review after the ADPREP.

                      YES!
It is saying it cannot find a DC (normally the first one you created) holding the PDC FSMO

Can you tell us more about the DCs you have at the moment
