    This is a non-trivial task and some consultancy would probably be helpful.

    As a starting point, review the Microsoft documentation:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l...(v=ws.10).aspx
    particularly the design and deployment guides.

    Make sure all the pre-requisites regarding internet connections and public IP addresses are met.

      My advice, unless you are running UAG or Server 2012, DON'T.

      I was at a Microsoft Techdays event in Glasgow a couple of weeks ago and when discussing the improvements in Direct Access in 2012 they confessed that of all the 2008 R2 native Direct Access deployments in the world attempted, there are only eight successful implementations.

      Using UAG is (very!) expensive, but from what I've heard it's much easier to setup and much more likely to work with Server 2012.
