    I have 1 server 2003SBS DC/Exchange;
5 years ago I installed a MsWindows2003 Server Std, add to my domain SBS and i promote to additional DC this server.
I Install today a new server MsWindows2008R2 64 ent.ed., i install all MS update and add it to my SBS domain.
I raise Domain Functional Leve and raise Forest Functional Level on my old server, then raise the Exchange Operational Mode.
Then, using 2008R2 DVD i ran:
    adprep32 /forestprerp
    adrpep32 /domainprep
    adprep32 /domainprep /gpprep
adprep32 /rodcprep on my old windows 2003SBS and 2003 server (all DC present) without erors displayed.
With dsquery I checked objectVersion: 47
When I try to do dcpromo on my new 2008R2 Server, it respond me to do domainprep /forestprep on my DC.
    I don't know why.
    May you help me?
    thx

Did you do the prep on the schema master, and has it replicated to all DCs?

AFAIK no issues with re-running the domainprep and forestprep if you want to

      Yes I do.

The output of dc query is objectVersion 47.
      I used adprep32.exe form DVD Ms Windows2008 R2 ent.ed. in \support\adprep folder.
      I ran:
      e:\support\adprep\adprep32 /forestprerp
      etc.
      from my 2 old DC.

      dcdiag /q on DC SBS:

There are warning or error events within the last 24 hoursafter the SYSVOL has benn shared. Failing replication problems may cause Group Policy problems.

      ....................... REBECCHI-SRV01 failed test frsevent.

dsdiag /q on additional old DC (2003 server R2)

it looks like replication isn't working correctly..

create something in the sysvol on the original DC and make sure it replicates to all servers

thx for your answers but there is still the problem.
I try to create some objects on my first DC, then I found they on my later DC.
I think the replication is OK.

I re-run domainprep and forestprep, no error but nothing is ghanged.

I tried also promote another 2008 R2 server but there is same error

          I'm really confused !!!!!

So have you checked that replication is working properly??

What about whether the object version is the same on both servers??

Yes, I add a new user "test" on DC1 and I found user on DC2.

The object Version is 47 in both server

More things get replicated than that but if you say its working then so be it.

Have you tried running adprep on the server you are trying to add??

I think replication work because if I add a user on DC1 I find it on DC2.

I have not tried running adprep on my new server because I belived adprep run only on DC.

Re: 2008R2 dcpromo ask domainprep /forestprep

Correct -- ADPREP will only run on a DC

You could try running it on each DC -- it will not have any bad effects (but may not run on anything except the SBS box as FSMO holder)-- and then re-attempting DCPROMO.

You should also confirm the new server is registered in DNS on the SBS

I presume you have reviewed the technet documentation (still valid for 2008R2)
